Rachael Nicholson plays with the weight and rigidity of metal to suggest contrary dynamics such as flow and lift. Where closed structures would seem to constrain, she instead suggests movement and change. So, a steel picture frame might dissemble to suggest a flock of rising birds; or long fronds of kinked metal rod might seem to flow upwards and outwards, defying geometric containment.
Nicholson has been commissioned by churches, charities and art centres, and by several private collectors in the UK. She has exhibited her work in galleries, business centres, art shops and private shows in Cambridge, London and Surrey. She now lives in Lewes, East Sussex.
Travelling across the floor and diagonally upward, with open triangular panels, ‘Street Corner’ links the crampedness of urban streets with the possibility of growth, opportunity and even musicality.
‘Blown’ is inspired by the complexity of woodland seed-pods, combining a strong structure with air-responsive dynamics.
