More Than Seizures

About this exhibition

Worldwide, an estimated 5 million people are diagnosed with epilepsy each year.

The condition can be deadly. Sudden, unexpected deaths due to epilepsy kill 500 people in the UK annually. Yet, despite the seriousness of the condition, it is often misunderstood by the wider public – sometimes being made light of by online trolls, or beset by myths.

More Than Seizures aims to dismiss these misconceptions by presenting authentic representations of those affected by the condition, and thereby providing a deeper understanding of its realities.

Each participant involved with the project, is given a disposable camera and asked to photograph the ways in which epilepsy impacts their lives. The resulting images are at times surreal, dark and amusing.

Interwoven with audio recordings, the images form a record of a condition – and the lives it affects – offering glimpses of that which many of us will never know.
