A is for Ant by Jack Davison
Performance and Screening Come and join us in the Farleys Sculpture Garden this half term for an unforgettable FREE experience as the Ant Bus rolls into East Sussex!
Bringing to life the concept of a children’s alphabet book, ‘A is for Ant’ is the short film debut by renowned British photographer Jack Davison in collaboration with production and costume designer Shona Heath.
Screened outdoors on a three-sided ‘Ant Bus’, this immersive cinematic experience is bookended by a short theatrical performance with puppetry to entertain the whole family. After the film, a collage workshop by resident illustrator Hatty Staniford will inspire audiences to create their own worlds.

A is for Ant by Jack Davison
A 10-minute film where each letter of the alphabet is represented by an animal – playfully characterised by both actors and live creatures. Typical of Jack Davison and Shona Heath’s respective aesthetics – The ‘A is for Ant’ project is created in the spirit of the Early modern avant-garde movements across design, appearance and atmosphere. A is for Ant calls to mind the dreamlike fantasy of Surrealism, the ready-made inventiveness of Dada and the theatricality of the Cabaret Voltaire.
‘A is for Ant’ is free to attend and lasts approximately 35 minutes, please reserve your free space with a complimentary morning or afternoon slot reservation.
A is for Ant will screen on The Ant Bus – a van complete with LED screen walls customised by Shona Heath.
Each screening will combine a live-action, theatrical presentation. Following the screening and performance, children will be encouraged to respond to the A is for Ant experience with an illustration workshop by artist Hatty Staniforth.
The A is for Ant project is accompanied with Jack Davison and graphic designer Matt Willey’s collaborative A-Z book.
This new publication is designed in two formats:
Book 1 is aimed for adults, whilst Book 2 has been designed for children. Book 2, conceived with a soft cover, utilizes newsprint to encourage children to work into, collage with and remake their own alphabet. Functioning in the tradition of an A-Z book, all 26 images from the Davison’s new series will feature.
