About this exhibition

“Bringing to light and awakening these sleeping images is the fruit of a decade’s discovery” says Downie. These pictures have, until now, been left cared for but dormant, undisturbed in the darkness of the Archives.

This exhibition shows that discoveries are still being made. Curator Lance Downie has worked with the collections for over 12 years. In More Light, he has selected the often unseen, overlooked or missed images from the Lee Miller Archives and The Penrose Collection.

This exhibition provides a celebration of Surrealism’s potential to make unexpected discoveries and it explores the fascination with, and creative power of, sleep and subsequent awakening.

The show includes images of surreal masked figures, stunning landscapes, and highlights the eerie precision of Miller’s forensic photography of famous bedrooms (including Picasso’s). “It’s a huge privilege to share these remarkable images with the public for the first time.” Downie concludes.
